Cleaner hurt at Smithfield Packing

A sanitation supervisor for the company that cleans the Smithfield Packing Co.’s plant in Tar Heel lost his left arm in an accident Sunday morning.

The worker, identified only as a 25-year-old Lumberton resident, was recovering at Duke University Medical Center, according to a news release.

The man worked for QSI Inc., an independent company contracted by Smithfield Packing to handle the daily cleaning of the plant after production is complete. The accident happened about 6:15 a.m. Sunday.

Dennis Pittman, a spokesman for Smithfield, referred all questions to QSI. But he did say that QSI employees work staggered shifts, depending on where they are assigned in the plant.

“It’s a very tragic situation,” Pittman said.

Officials with QSI were investigating the incident.

“Our first concern is with our employee and making sure we do everything we can for him,” QSI spokesman Bill White said in a news release. “We are working very closely with everyone involved and will provide information when we can.”
