Immigration Reform

For more than 100 years, the UFCW and its predecessor unions have been fighting to organize, represent and improve the wages and working conditions of immigrant workers in the food industry. A century ago, Polish, Italian, and Southern European immigrants worked in our nation’s meatpacking plants. Today, immigrants from Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Africa work in the packing, poultry, food processing and other manufacturing sectors, as well as in the retail and retail food industries.

Immigrants have played an important role in building our nation and our communities, and the UFCW believes that America’s immigration policy must be reformed to end the cycle of exploitation that exits in today’s workplaces - exploitation that drags down wages, benefits, and working conditions for all workers. Our current immigration policy has real human costs, and its primary victims are workers - both immigrant and native-born. The UFCW will continue to fight for reform that ensures that all working people are able to improve their lives and realize the American Dream.
